2009 CHOZEN AWARDS BENEFACTOR
Founded in 1905, United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta is now in its second century of bringing our community together around the issues that affect us all, such as education, income, health and homelessness. Led by community volunteers across 13 counties and current president Milton J. Little, Jr., United Way recently embarked on a plan to achieve six critical goals by 2014, including making sure that families are self-sufficient and that children enter school ready to learn and graduate prepared for careers or further study.
In addition to helping metro Atlanta residents obtain the basics of a good life, United Way has emerged as a key part of disaster response in our community, a role that became highly visible in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The organization is home to the nation’s first 24/7 information and referral service, United Way 2-1-1, and has helped shape the long-term response to the tornado that struck downtown Atlanta in 2008 and the North Georgia flooding in September 2009. Each year, hundreds of people generously give of their time, talents and treasure to help United Way achieve its vision of making metro Atlanta a place where all individuals and families thrive.
